GunZ Swords Guide — Katana & Kodachi

Melee weapons are not a fallback in GunZ The Duel — they are the engine of K-Style. The Katana and Kodachi define how you move, how you bait shots, and how you convert momentum into damage. Every advanced technique in the K-Style hub assumes you wield a sword confidently. This page compares blades, explains animation timings in the Steam remaster, and links sword choice to maps and loadouts.

If you only read one weapons page besides the Weapons index, make it this one. Rifles win lobbies occasionally; swords win players forever.

Katana — the standard blade

The Katana offers the best balance of reach, slash speed, and Slash Shot reliability. Its forward slash covers enough distance to threaten rifle users who get greedy on Arena center. Butterfly with Katana feels stable — critical when learning muscle memory.

Ideal for: new players, Slash Shot learners, balanced duelists, Quest bosses with clear melee windows.

Weakness: slightly slower than Kodachi on pure rushdown; opponents may out-Half-Step you if you telegraph slashes.

Pair Katana with Breaker 6 for the classic meta documented on Loadouts.

Kodachi — speed over reach

The Kodachi trades range for faster slashes and tighter animation cancels. Veterans use it on Arena and small duel rooms where every frame matters. Kodachi Half-Step chains feel sharper but punish mis-input harder because you enter melee range faster without extra reach safety.

Ideal for: aggressive duelists, Half-Step specialists, players who already aim Breaker swaps cleanly.

Weakness: less threat at max range; rifle users on Town rooftops can kite more easily.

Daggers and niche blades

Daggers maximize animation speed at the cost of damage per slash. They appear in novelty builds and some Quest rewards. Ranked players rarely main Daggers because duel time-to-kill favors Katana consistency. Check Tier List for patch-specific notes.

Slash Shot and sword-gun flow

Slash Shot cancels a slash animation into a fired round from your ranged weapon — usually pistol or SMG. Katana’s timing window is forgiving enough to drill in Training Room. Kodachi requires tighter input because you exit slash range faster.

Flow example on Mansion: slash from door angle → Slash Shot → Breaker if opponent pushes → Butterfly out before third party. Study Slash Shot and Reload Shot guides next.

Butterfly and sword weight

Sword weight is light, so Butterfly distance stays near maximum for your character loadout. Adding heavy primary weapons slightly reduces dodge distance — another reason duelists swap to pistol or shotgun during movement chains. See Weapons index for weight basics.

Map synergy

Town: Katana excels on rooftops — long slashes catch jumpers.

Mansion: Kodachi thrives in tight corners; Katana safer for ballroom spacing.

Dungeon: Katana Slash Shot cycles help boss DPS checks.

Arena: Kodachi for pure duels; Katana for learning fundamentals.

Quest considerations

Some Quest bosses resist melee or require elemental consumables. Swords still handle trash mobs efficiently. Switch to ranged only when enrage timers demand sustained DPS. Link Quest walkthrough for stage-specific tips.

Training progression

  1. Training Room: 100 clean slashes without whiffing air. 2. Butterfly circles around a pillar. 3. Slash Shot into wall target. 4. Duel bots on Arena. 5. Compare Katana vs Kodachi on Town for one week each.

Common mistakes

Spamming slash without spacing — you walk into Breaker range. Ignoring rifle angles on open maps. Choosing Kodachi before you can Butterfly consistently. Not binding slash and swap keys for pinky comfort.

Swords are GunZ identity. Master Katana first, experiment with Kodachi, and let shotguns finish what your blade starts.
